Working with Parents of CWS within CBT Framework
Ali Berquez will briefly describe the principles and practice of Cognitive Behavior Therapy. She will introduce participants to the Family Maintenance Model (Biggart, Cook & Fry, 2007) as a way of conceptualizing the bidirectional interaction between children who stutter and their parents. She will give an overview of the key themes that come up for parents using this model and explore ways to support children and parents to manage their emotions and behavioral responses. Video examples will be shared.

1 Understand the core components of CBT including a formulation.
2 Be able to describe the Family Maintenance Model and how to explore children’s and parents’ cognitive cycles.
3 Understand how to explore the impact of one cycle on the other and options for management.

Bio: Ali Berquez is Clinical Lead at the Michael Palin Centre and holds specific responsibilities for Safeguarding and Clinical Supervision. She works clinically with clients of all ages who stammer and/ or clutter. Ali is a qualified practitioner in Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Solution Focused Brief Therapy and integrates these methods into her clinical work with children, young people, parents and adults. Ali is an experienced trainer who regularly delivers courses in the UK and internationally including the Stuttering Foundation’s annual Eastern workshop in Boston. She is involved in writing, contributing to research projects, offering individual and group clinical supervision and delivering Clinical Supervision training. Ali is part of the Scientific Committee for the Oxford Stuttering and Cluttering Research Conference; has been a registered European Stuttering Specialist since 2017; and was Chair of the UK National Stammering Clinical Excellence Network from July 2022-25. Ali co-authored a book about Solution Focused Brief Therapy with children and young people who stammer and their parents in 2024.
