Working with School-aged CWS: Emotions
This presentation will begin with the rationale for working through emotions with school-aged children who stutter. We will explore ways in which we can help children and parents to understand the emotions related to stuttering and how these emotions influence the comprehensive experience of stuttering (physically, emotionally, cognitively). We will include suggestions for activities that SLPs may include in their clinical practice, with children and their parents, with the goal of increasing emotional understanding and development.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will:
1 Describe the rationale for targeting emotional factors in stuttering therapy for school-aged children who stutter.
2 Identify therapist skills that support children in identifying and talking about emotions related to stuttering.
3 Apply strategies for involving parents in therapy that targets emotional understanding and regulation.
4 Describe and select developmentally appropriate therapeutic activities to build emotional awareness, regulation, resilience, and communication confidence.
Target Audience: Speech-Language Pathologists, Graduate Students
